Dr. Wayne Shelton waited patiently in the lobby of colossal building in southern Chicago, rapping his fingers on the wooden desk, as he waited for one Dr. HH Holmes to arrive. It had been under the cover of darkness, partially out of convenience and partially out of shame, that Dr. Shelton made his way to the Holmes hotel in Englewood, one of the fastest growing areas in Chicago. As the clocks struck midnight the door behind the front desk creaked open, Dr. Holmes appeared in front of him. The two exchanged pleasantries talking about their businesses, families, and the upcoming Worlds Fair. The halls of the Castle, thats what Holmes business was named, were narrow and claustrophobic. They took unnecessary turns and they were all so†¦show more content†¦How he had so cleverly taken care of that little problem, well almost taken care of it, the last little bit of it was two floors above him, fast asleep, like all of the other guests, no idea about what had just transpired bel ow them. It had been in November when Holmes girlfriend, Julia, told him that she was pregnant. Holmes response was that of love and warmth, of course he would marry her, but only if she got an abortion. Holmes explained that with the business and Pearl, Julia’s daughter from a previous marriage, one that Holmes had brought to an end, that was just too much for one family to handle. Julia reluctantly agreed. Holmes had one more caveat, he had to be the one to perform the operation. Explaining to Julia that he had done the procedure plenty of times in college. He would just give her some chloroform, and while she was asleep the operation would be performed, a few hours later she would wake up ready to begin her new life as Mrs. HH Holmes. Snow fell. Gently coating the city of Chicago in almost powder like miracle from heaven. For the travelers from down south, Atlanta New Orleans Richmond, it was the most magnificent thing they had ever seen. For the residents of Chicago it was just another reminder of the harsh Midwestern winter that was fast approaching.
